Sunday 13 June is World Canoeing Day and the Sutherland Shire Canoe Club invites you to join their Members in paddling on the Woronora River to celebrate.
You are invited to bring your own canoe or kayak or to take advantage of our Test Paddling for which we supply a canoe or kayak, paddle, PFD (personal Flotation Device) and basic instruction.
If you haven't paddled for some time our Club Members will be happy to provide some refresher training and tips.
The base for the day's activities is the SSCC's Clubhouse at Burnum Burnum Reserve, Bonnet Bay and activities will run from 8:00AM to 2:00Pm on Sunday, starting with a group paddle towards the Needles at 8:00AM.
We particularly welcome people who live on the Wonnie and haven't used their canoe or kayak for some time to take part in this paddle. You don't need to paddle all the way to enjoy the scenery and wildlife.
In the interests of safety and to allow maximum use of craft, Test Paddlers will not be able to participate in paddles outside the Club's 500 metre course and paddling time will obviously depend on demand. Test Paddlers are required to pay a boat maintenance fee of $5 which is deducted from Membership fees if they join the Club.
At 10:00AM there will be a 2km Sprint Race open to all paddlers in all types of canoe or kayak. The course is from the Clubhouse to the low road bridge and back.
Senior Club Coach, Joan Morison, will be conducting some surprise novelty events after the race is over.
Club members will be on hand to provide advice on canoeing and kayaking from 8:00AM to 2:00PMand may let you try paddling their boats.
A free cuppa will be on the go during this time.
Tickets will also be on sale during the day in the Sutherland Shire Canoe Club's Super Raffle which has the following prizes:
- One Mango carbon fibre wing racing paddle to the value of $600 - donated by Mango Racing.
- Two night's accommodation for two people in a one bedroom villa Beltana Villas, Pokolbin (heart of the Hunter Valley Vineyards) at the weekend rate of $520 for the two nights - donated by Beltana Villas.
