Sutherland Shire Canoe Club paddlers, Kath and Peter Tuziak, won four medals at the Australasian Masters Games which were held in Adelaide during the last fortnight.

Neither paddler had competed in TK1 events other than at Club level, nor had they competed in sprints, so their performances at West Lakes in windy and choppy conditions were meritorious.

Kath surprised herself by winning a gold medal in the Ladies 60-64 TK1 500 metres on Day 1 and silver in the 200 metres on Day 2 while Peter won a silver in the Men's TK1 500 metres and a bronze in the 10 kilometre Marathon on Day 3.  Peter had trouble staying in his lane because of rudder problems in the 200 metres in which he finished fourth, while Kath withdrew from the Marathon because of illness.

Despite this, as one of only two people at the Marathon venue with a boat licence (Peter was the other but he was paddling), Kath drove the safety boat to asssist event officials for over two hours.

The Tuziaks competed in many Dragon Boating events for the Port Hacking Dragon Boat Club (Hackers) on the River Torrens over the last two days of the Games.  Their best result was fourth place in the Final of the Mixed Masters 20s (for paddlers in the 40-49 year age group) earlier today.

During their drive on the coastal route to Adelaide Kath and Peter discovered many delightful paddling locations on rivers and lakes and they hope Club Members may be interested in visiting some of these on Club trips in the coming year.

Kath and Peter would like to thank and congratulate Canoe South Australia and West Lakes Canoe Club for their excellent staging of the Canoeing and Kayaking events at the Australasian Masters Games.  The cameraderie among the competitiors was great.

Special thanks go to Laurie Collett, the 2005 dual World Marathon Masters Champion, who gave Peter 10 complimentary copies of his excellent book, Kayaking: The Basic Strokes, for distribution to new SSCC members.

The West Lakes CC facilities, including an amazing array of Club racing craft, are superb and Chairman, Michael Arthur, was very helpful in providing advice which will benefit SSCC in the long term.
